Practical Problems in Platelet Transfusion

Abstract
The blood transfusion demand for specific components such as platelets tab been
increasing for the treatment of leukemias and other neoplasms.
Plateletpheresis is the centrifugal separation of platelets from whole blood with a
continuous or intermittent return of platelet-poor blood to the donor.
It may be performed by multiple bag systems or by machines designed for this
purpose such as Haemonetics or IBM devices.
This paper presents some data obtained from 194 plateletpheresis using Haemonetics
30-S for various cases of thrombocytopenia admitted to the Severance Hospital, Yonsei
University College of Medicine from September, 1980 to November, 1982. In summary,
the Haemonetics 30-S cell separator demonstrated to produce a good final product with
minimal donor risk and discomfort. The recipients showed variable therapeutic responses,
judged by correction of the initial detects. The use of a single donor who can be
repeatedly pheresed mamies this equipment particularly advantageous in reducing the
risk of sensitization and disease transmission. The important problems of platelet
transfusion in clinical practice is the available donor when the patient needs platelets.
